ย่านสามย่านมีประวัติศาสตร์เป็นชุมชนชนชั้นแรงงานที่มีความหลากหลายทางชาติพันธุ์ ตั้งอยู่ติดกับจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย แต่ถูกคลื่นการรื้อถอนและการพัฒนาที่ขับเคลื่อนโดยทุนที่ดินเชิงสถาบันกัดกร่อนมาตลอด

Sam Yan Film & Ideas Festival 2026 is a public festival of film, thought, and civic education rooted in one of Bangkok's most contested urban neighbourhoods. Sam Yan has long been a multi-ethnic, working-class area beside Chulalongkorn University. In recent decades, it has been reshaped by waves of demolition, displacement, and institutional real-estate development. Against this backdrop, SYFIF creates a space for students, residents, artists, scholars, and the wider public to think together about the city, democracy, memory, and power.

The festival brings films into conversation with unconventional and often heterodox ideas. Its programme focuses on three connected themes: urban rights and community-led city-making; the contested heritage of Thai democratic history; and digital space, artificial intelligence, and the future of human agency. Rather than treating education as something confined to universities, SYFIF turns the neighbourhood itself into a classroom. Through screenings, lectures, public discussions, workshops, and student-led activities, the festival invites people to ask: Who has the right to shape the city? Whose histories are preserved or erased? And how can new ideas help us imagine more democratic futures?

SYFIF is organised by Nisit Sam Yan Press, a Bangkok-based independent publisher and civic platform that has produced Thai translations of major works in political thought, democracy, social criticism, and public philosophy since 2017.
