At Sam Yan Press, the one and only student-run press in Thailand, we embark on a remarkable journey towards illuminating the path of activism, freedom, and human rights. Despite being beckoned with millions to halt our operations, our commitment to these ideals stands unbroken. (reading what happened here.)
We are proud to have raised awareness about the Hong Kong struggle for democracy, a venture begun with a book dedicated to Joshua Wong’s birthday during his first incarceration. This was followed by the publication of “Vigil” by Jeffrey Wasserstrom, shining a light on the Uyghur genocide and Chinese dissidents, and amplifying the voices of esteemed journalists, academics, and luminaries like Liu Xiaobo and Fang Lizhi.
As we step into 2024, financial constraints do not deter our spirit. Our unwavering resolve continues to enlighten the Thai populace about the global struggle against dictatorship, instigating a global citizen’s awakening.
Upcoming Publications:
- Prophet Against Slavery: This graphic novel brings to life Benjamin Lay, the Quaker and activist. An early advocate using symbolic action and boycotts against slavery, Lay’s courageous endeavors resonate powerfully today. We envision his tale extending beyond the pages, potentially gracing the stage to reach a wider audience.
- Betraying Big Brother: The Feminist Awakening in China by Leta Hong Fincher: In a world beneath Xi’s oppressive rule, this book explores the burgeoning feminist activism facing tremendous pressure and repression. Echoing Thailand’s growing feminist movement, we aim to foster collaboration between Thai and Chinese activists, transcending geographical and political boundaries.
- Anna Akhmatova selected poems: Chayangoon Thamma-un, fresh from Russian studies, translates the profound poetry of Anna Akhmatova. Experience the eloquent resistance of this renowned poet who endured life under Stalin’s oppressive regime, offering inspiration and light to Thailand for the first time.
- Kolyma Tales by Varlam Shalamov: Journey through history with Chayangoon’s translation from Russian. Delve deep into the regime and the Gulag, learning from the poignant lessons etched in time.
In our ongoing endeavors, we hope to secure rights for the translation of Tim Snyder’s “Bloodland” into Thai, a historical masterpiece highlighting Hitler’s and Stalin’s reigns, underscoring our robust support for Ukraine. Our press stands united, extending our aid to Ukrainian refugees in Thailand, resonating our global solidarity and unwavering commitment to human rights.
- China’s Influence and the Center-periphery Tug of War in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Indo-Pacific Editors by Brian C. H. Fong, Andrew J. Nathan, Jieh-min Wu: After the success of “Taiwan is Not China,” our second book aims to dispel the smokescreen of CCP propaganda, highlighting the strategic warfare unleashed upon numerous nations.
