Sam Yan Heritage Walks

For years, Sam Yan Press has been at the forefront of advocating for the protection of local communities, their history, and their cultural significance. Our efforts played a crucial role in mobilizing over 50,000 signatures to oppose Chulalongkorn University’s demolition plan and in transforming the shrine at the heart of Sam Yan into a symbol of resistance. Today, more than 10,000 people visit the shrine each month, a testament to the power of collective action.

Beyond the shrine, our advocacy over the past five years has focused on securing fair treatment for local residents, pushing back against unjust evictions, and ensuring access to affordable housing. These communities, which predate the university itself, have long contributed to the rich cultural and social fabric of Sam Yan, offering hospitality and support to students, faculty, and visitors alike.

Our commitment to heritage preservation extends beyond activism—we have worked extensively to document and archive Sam Yan’s history through research, translations, and publications. Now, this dedication has culminated in the Sam Yan Heritage Walks, a project designed to bring people—students, locals, and international visitors—closer to the stories that make this neighborhood unique.

Through these guided walks, participants will explore the shrine, historic shops, the church, and other landmarks, gaining insight into the lives, struggles, and contributions of Sam Yan’s communities. Having previously organized these walks informally for school students, we are now establishing a regular program to educate youth and the wider public on the importance of heritage, community solidarity, and urban justice.

Join us in rediscovering Sam Yan—a place of history, resilience, and cultural richness. Together, we can ensure that its legacy continues to inspire a more just and vibrant city.
