We are thrilled to announce that our student-run press, Sam Yan Press, has the unique opportunity to publish several legendary books translated into Thai in 2024. Here’s a sneak peek at our upcoming releases:
- Animal Liberation Now by Peter Singer: Celebrating its 50th anniversary, this book has recently undergone a revision. It ignited the modern animal rights movement globally. As Thailand experiences booming economic and tourism growth, the ethical treatment of animals has unfortunately been overshadowed. With the academic sphere still providing limited discussions on this matter, we hope this seminal work will usher in a transformation in Thailand’s dietary habits and the overall treatment of animals.
- The Society of the Spectacle (French: La société du spectacle) by Guy Debord: We are proud to present this influential work, translated directly from French by our talented translator, Anawat Arthachinda. A powerful critique against rampant consumerism and urban gentrification, this book is more relevant than ever. As urban issues become more pressing amidst rising consumerism and the attention economy, we believe this text will ignite deep reflections, particularly inspiring artists across disciplines, and catalyze discussions on urbanism in Thailand.
- Capital Realism by Mark Fisher: In “Capitalist Realism,” Mark Fisher deftly examines the pervasive belief that capitalism is the only viable economic and political system. He delves into how culture, education, and mental health are affected under its umbrella. This book serves as an essential read for those eager to understand the contemporary landscape of capitalism and its implications on society.
- This Life by Martin Hägglund (abbreviated version): In “This Life,” Hägglund presents a profound argument for why our finite lives give value and meaning. Challenging religious conceptions of eternity, he offers a secular vision of how commitment to our mortal existence can lead to a richer, more fulfilling life. This thought-provoking text encourages readers to deeply reflect on existence, values, and purpose.
Our dedicated team of translators is working tirelessly to bring these legendary texts to Thai readers. However, we still face financial challenges to publish this remarkable series. We humbly seek your support.
