Sam Yan Press Supports Animal Welfare Division: Pioneering Initiatives at Chulalongkorn University

August 20
We are thrilled to announce the incredible success of the first-ever Animal Welfare event organized by the newly established Animal Welfare Division of the Chulalongkorn University Student Union—the first of its kind at any Thai university! This groundbreaking initiative is focused on promoting plant-based choices and advocating for cage-free canteens on campus.

To kick things off, we hosted a screening of Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret. Despite just one week of promotion, we had an impressive turnout of over 20 students eager to learn and engage with the pressing issue of animal welfare. Their enthusiasm was inspiring, and many expressed a strong desire to make a meaningful impact at Chulalongkorn University.

Although there is still a significant gap in knowledge about animal rights, Sam Yan Press is committed to supporting the cause through ongoing translation projects and resources. We are excited to empower student activism and contribute to building a sustainable movement for animal welfare.

A big thank you to all the supporters of this event, and a special thanks to the dedicated students of the Animal Welfare Division for making it happen!

Yesterday may have marked a historic moment for animal welfare in Thailand! We hosted the first-ever workshop on plant-based advocacy and animal welfare, specifically for Thai students at Chulalongkorn University, with students from Thammasat University also joining this important event.

The workshop was made possible by the Animal Welfare Division of the Chulalongkorn University Student Union, a new department dedicated to promoting plant-based living and advocating for cage-free campus practices. We were grateful for the invaluable support from two incredible international organizations: Sinergia Animal Thailand and The Humane League.

The workshop saw a better-than-expected turnout, with student leaders from various groups, such as the film club and animal rescue club from Veterinary faculty, expressing interest in incorporating animal welfare into their activities. It’s encouraging to see student activism growing in this direction, with a shared focus on both climate action and ethical treatment of animals.

This initiative has been part of my vision since I served as president of the student union three years ago. Seeing it come to life now is deeply fulfilling and highlights the increasing awareness among young people of the climate crisis and the impact of animal farming.

At Sam Yan Press, we are dedicated to expanding the animal rights movement in Thailand. One of our current goals is to translate and publish key literature on animal ethics and rights, which is still largely unavailable in Thai. By providing more educational resources, we hope to spark important conversations and foster a movement that will drive meaningful change for animal welfare in the country.

A huge thank you to the passionate advocates from Sinergia Animal Thailand and The Humane League for making this workshop possible, and to the incredible student organizers who made this event a success.
